Entry Deadline: Friday, October 8, 2021
Project Summary: Ohio University (OU) is inviting Ohio and national artists to submit up to eight (8) digital images of past work for the OU – Clippinger Laboratories Percent for Art Project commission. From the submissions, a group of semi-finalists will be selected to visit the campus, meet with the committee (comprised of OU faculty and staff), and visit the artwork site location(s) to create a site-specific artwork proposal. OU employees and their spouses are not eligible to apply for this commission. Students enrolled in any degree-granting program are not eligible to apply.
Project Background and Building History:
As the headquarters for OU's Departments of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Geography, Geology, Physics, and Astronomy, Clippinger Laboratories is currently undergoing its first serious renovation in its 56-year history. Phase 1 of the project created a new chemistry building north of Clippinger. Phase 3, set for completion in Fall 2023, will finalize all labs and classrooms. Clippinger and the new Chemistry Building are visited and utilized by more than 80% of all OU’s undergraduates. Over 8,000 students take classes in the two buildings each year. Likewise, 96,000 hours of laboratory and related research are conducted annually by undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) independent study courses.
Mission of School or Site: The mission of Ohio University's College of Arts and Science is to develop in students the knowledge and skills for success in a dynamic, global society, and to foster excellence in creativity and research. A rich diversity of rigorous academic opportunities and experiences provide critical thinking and communication skills, cultivate intellect and creativity, and encourage empathy and working for the common good. All of these are key building blocks to a happy, successful career in an ever-changing, globally-minded workforce.
Artistic Goals of the Commissioned Piece:
The primary location for the commissioned artwork is the exterior green space between Clippinger and the new Chemistry building. The location will have strong student and faculty interaction and will establish a visual and physical connection to the building. There is a desire that the commissioned work will be science-themed, earth-focused, abstract or representational, low maintenance, and connect the teachings in the building to the larger campus-wide community.
Practical Considerations:
Artwork considered for the Clippinger Laboratories project must be durable and suitably maintenance-free. The artwork site is the exterior plaza area that has high traffic by pedestrians and cars. The commissioned work should not include electrical or lighting elements. Images of the site are attached.
Selection Review Process:
Interested artists should complete the online form by visiting: https://ohiopercentforart-oucommissionannouncement.artcall.org
In addition to the eight (8) images uploaded, artists are requested to submit the following documents:
1. a current resume (maximum four pages) & artist statement as one pdf
2. an image list in the order the images are uploaded
The Advisory Selection Committee will review submitted materials and will develop a list of semi-finalist artists that will be invited to meet with the committee for a site visit. After the site visit, the semi-finalists will create a site-specific proposal for artwork for the Clippinger Laboratories project. Each semi-finalist will be offered a proposal fee in addition to an honorarium for their site visit. Artist proposals will be judged competitively by the Committee. Submitted proposals become the property of Ohio University.
